HACCP vs HACCP-Based Systems: Why the Distinction Still Trips People Up

Many SA businesses claim to be 'HACCP certified' when they are actually certified to a HACCP-based scheme. Here is why the difference matters commercially.

HACCP is a methodology, not a certifiable standard in its own right. What gets audited and certified is a system that applies HACCP — typically ISO 22000, FSSC 22000, BRCGS, IFS, SQF or a national scheme such as R638-aligned HACCP in South Africa.

Why this matters when you bid for retail

Major retailers and exporters specify the scheme they accept (for example FSSC 22000 or BRCGS Issue 9), not "HACCP". A HACCP plan on its own — even an excellent one — will not unlock a Woolworths, Shoprite, Pick n Pay or international export contract.

What a HACCP-based scheme adds

A management system with leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement.
Prerequisite programmes (PRPs) covering hygiene, pest control, maintenance, training, traceability and recall.
Operational PRPs and CCPs identified through a documented hazard analysis.
External certification by an accredited body, with surveillance audits.

Choosing the right scheme
