Reviewing the past two reporting cycles of the National Consumer Commission alongside our own recall database, three categories have driven the majority of South African food recalls: mycotoxins (especially aflatoxin in peanut products and patulin in apple juice), allergen and labelling errors, and microbiological contamination of ready-to-eat products.
Mycotoxins remain the top hazard
Aflatoxin in peanut butter has now triggered multiple high-profile recalls across both branded and private-label products. The lesson is the same every time: incoming raw material testing must be batch-level, not certificate-of-analysis-only, and supplier approval must include audited mycotoxin controls.
Allergens are still labelling failures, not contamination failures
Most of the allergen recalls we have reviewed were caused by the wrong product being packed into the wrong packaging, or by a label change that did not flow through to artwork sign-off. This is a change-management problem and is solved with a robust label control procedure with a final-pack verification step before release.
Listeria in RTE is back on the radar
Several 2024–2026 notices involved Listeria in ready-to-eat products. Environmental monitoring programmes that focus on zone 1 and 2 swabbing, with corrective action triggers tied to trend data rather than single results, are the most reliable defence.
