The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has continued to publish quarterly recall updates and media statements through 2024 and 2025, signalling a more visible enforcement posture on food safety in South Africa.
What this means for manufacturers
Suppliers who initiate a recall are expected to notify the NCC promptly, provide a documented recall plan, and report on effectiveness — including units recovered and corrective actions taken. The Commission has been explicit that incomplete or delayed notification can trigger investigation under the Consumer Protection Act.
Practical takeaway
Recall readiness is no longer a once-a-year mock exercise. Sites should review their recall procedure annually, run a documented mock recall at least every six months, and ensure traceability data can be produced within four hours from raw material to finished product and back.
